4 Favorite Spots to Get The Summer Scoop

It’s that time of year. Ice cream season. Ice cream can be appreciated every day, but it’s during the summer months that it becomes essential. It used to be simple. You had a choice of chocolate or vanilla, and if you were lucky, maybe strawberry. Things have changed. Flavors like Vietnamese Coffee, Nectarine Crisp and Salted Caramel are just a few of the possibilities. Let your taste buds be tempted as you dig into our list of favorite spots to get summer scoops:

Humphry Slocombe
Enter the bizarre, delicious, frozen universe that’s housed in the Ferry Building, about a mile and a half from Jasper. Try the Blue Bottle Vietnamese Coffee with coffee brewed from local Blue Bottle beans, chicory, and sweetened condensed milk or Secret Breakfast, with a base of condensed milk, kosher salt, and vanilla beans steeped with bourbon. The crunchy pieces of mixed-in cereal are usually referred to as caramelized cornflakes, though they’re actually crispy cornflake cookies that have been mashed up.

Smitten Ice Cream
Indulge in the perfect scoop of the freshest, purest, creamiest ice cream, made right before your eyes. There are multiple spots to dig in, but we recommend planning an adventure to Hayes Valley  (just 3 miles from jasper) and enjoying a scoop in the park while people-watching to double your indulgence. Smitten uses the freshest and purest ingredients to freeze each batch of ice cream to-order, from scratch, in just minutes with the help of their patented, liquid nitrogen-enabled Brrr(TM) machines. Try the Truly Smitten Sundae: Dough My Goodness with Salted Caramel ice cream, cookie dough pieces, TCHO chocolate sauce, homemade whipped cream. Another worthy scoop is the seasonal favorite: Nectarine Crisp. Ripened by the hot sun overhead, stone fruits from local orchards are juiciest and most plentiful throughout July.

Bi-Rite Creamery
Serving up small-batch, hand-made, seasonal ice cream, lines usually snake out the door and down the block at this popular scoop shop just off Mission Dolores Park, about 3 miles from Jasper.  In the bakery adjoining the ice cream kitchen, they make everything that goes into the ice cream, whether it’s brownies, peanut brittle, marshmallows, or the snickerdoodles. They have ice cream scoops, cakes, combos, pies, sundaes, popsicles and more. Try the salted caramel or balsamic strawberry.

Mitchell’s Ice Cream
Since 1953 this classic SF shop has been inspiring lines of fans with its handmade premium ice cream. They make small batches (10 gallons at a time) of 16% butterfat, super-premium ice cream. Choose from 40 flavors daily, about 4 miles away in the Mission. Try the seasonal scoop of Espresso Toffee Crunch with espresso ice cream, toffee candy and espresso chips or the Horchata with rice milk flavored ice cream with a swirl of cinnamon honey.
