Less than half a mile from your home at Jasper, the new landmark Transbay Transit Center will replace the former Transbay Terminal with a modern regional transportation hub containing more than one million square feet. The TTC will feature a rooftop public park, Grand Hall, an elevated Bus Deck, retail shops, entertainment, and conference, educational and cultural space.

2018 has been a busy year at the Transbay Transit Center. We’ve collected recent updates from their Facebook page and summarized it into a visual journey of the recent progress at the Transit Center.

“Nearly done placing concrete along the perimeter sidewalk of the rooftop park. This sidewalk will be a continuous half mile loop around the entire park for walking, jogging, strolling, enjoying.”

“Elegant and beautiful to the eye, the groundbreaking geometrical pattern in the design of the exterior awning of the Transit Center is from the work of eminent British mathematical physicist Sir Roger Penrose, who just toured the Center.”

“Honoring the past and excited for the future, workers from Anvil Builders Inc take a quick snap before moving a bench from the old terminal storage to its eventual new home in the new Transit Center. Local San Francisco general contractor Anvil Builders is one of dozens of small businesses helping to build the Transit Center while employing local residents!”

“Testing the Grand Hall LED lighting artistic element. When complete, visitors will be greeted by a beautiful LED light display and light columns and skylights bringing in natural light as they enter the Grand Hall. The design reduces electricity needs and energy costs!”

“With most of the large trees planted, we now turn our attention to the Center’s 16,000+ plants and shrubs to be planted in the next few months. Drought-tolerant, beautiful & functional. The Center’s landscape will help improve the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide from bus exhaust and create a home for birds, butterflies, and other pollinators.”

“Installing ceiling panels (purchased from Kentucky) and column covers (purchased from Illinois) on the Bus Deck level today. In addition to local hire and historic investments in local small businesses here in the Bay Area, the Transit Center project is a Buy America project, providing economic benefits to nearly every state in the nation – 47 to date!”

“Workers installing glass paneling behind #NedKahn’s Bus Fountain, one of four major pieces of artwork at the Transit Center. The fountain is a series of water jets on the rooftop park triggered by sensors that respond to the movement of buses below.”

“Joined by SFMTA | San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to continue planning bus operations. Muni will operate several lines from the bus plaza at street level and a line off the bus deck. You’ll be able to board the #25 at the Transit Center and go to Treasure Island without ever touching busy city streets!”

“The rooftop park got a nice assist from mother nature today with the rain. The two signature trees at the far east end are planted and ready to bloom.”

“At 14 feet in diameter these fans will help keep fresh air moving throughout the bus deck level at the new Transit Center!”

“Bus Jet Fountain is one of four major artwork installations at the Transit Center. A series of water jets in the park will be triggered by sensors that respond to the movement of buses below.”

“Crews are planting Asian Jasmine on one of the hillsides and installing glass flooring in the public rooftop park. They are also finishing up work on skylights that will bring sunlight all the way through the Center, even two levels below the surface to the eventual train service. These talented crews are building a world-class Transit Center that will serve generations. So far, the project has invested nearly five million craft hours to make sure the facility is ready to meet the needs of a growing region while putting people to work.”

“At 1,400 feet long, the Transit Center would be the tallest building in San Francisco if stood upright by more than 300 feet!”
