Chinese New Year 2019 rings in the Year of the Pig

The Chinese New Year celebration in San Francisco is one of the largest in the world. The main draw of this celebration, the Grand Parade, will be held on Saturday, February 23. In addition, you will find lots of fun events for the lunar New Year in both February and March, just minutes from Jasper. Here are a few featured events happening as the Year of the Pig is welcomed:

Mini-Procession & Ribbon Cutting: February 2 from 10am – 11am
Kick off the New Year with a procession that gives a taste of what the larger Lunar New Year parade will bring. The procession will include lion dancers, giant walking puppets, costumed stilt walkers, drummers and dancers.

Flower Market Fair: Saturday, February 2 from 10am – 8pm and Sunday, February 3 from 9am – 6pm
Buy fresh flowers, plants, candies, and fruits at this open-air market in the heart of Chinatown. You will find over 120 booths and concessions making this a shopper’s paradise.

Basketball Jamboree: Saturday, February 9 from 10am – 4pm
The Chinese New Year Basketball Jamboree will kick off the Year of the Pig with many exciting basketball games. The players represent the greater Chinatown-North Beach community and the San Francisco Middle Schools.

Miss Chinatown USA Pageant: Thursday, February 16 at 7:30pm
Lovely and talented young women from throughout the United States have come to San Francisco to compete in the annual Miss Chinatown U.S.A. Pageant. The new Queen and her Court will become goodwill ambassadors for the Chinese community throughout the New Year.

Miss Chinatown Coronation Ball: Friday, February 22: 6pm Dinner, 8pm Coronation, 8:30pm Dancing
The newly selected Miss Chinatown U.S.A and her court will be crowned at the annual Miss Chinatown U.S.A. Coronation Ball. The black tie dinner/dance, attended by many community leaders promises to be a highlight of the Lunar New Year festivities.

Community Street Fair: Saturday, February 23 from 10am – 4:30pm and Sunday, February 24 from 9am – 5pm
Traditional dancing, drumming, acrobats, Chinese calligraphy, fortune telling, and lion dancing Grant Avenue from California to Broadway; also on Washington, Jackson, and Pacific between Stockton and Kearny. Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of San Francisco’s exhilarating Chinatown during one of the community’s most exciting times of the year.

Chinese New Year Grand Parade: Saturday, February 23 from 5:15pm-8pm
Named one of the top ten Parades in the world by the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA), the Southwest Airlines® Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco is one of the grandest night illuminated Parades in the country. Parade highlights include elaborate floats, lion dancers, folk dancers, costumed elementary school groups, marching bands, stilt walkers, Chinese acrobats, and a 268 foot long Golden Dragon (“Gum Lung”). The parade starts at 5:15PM at the corner of 2nd and Market Streets. It then weaves its way through Chinatown and ends at Jackson and Kearny Streets. The parade usually ends around 8pm.

Chinatown YMCA Run: Sunday, March 3
The Chinatown YMCA will hold their annual “Chinese New Year Run” on Sunday, March 3 at 8am. Starts at 8am at Sacramento and Grant streets, then runs through Chinatown, North Beach, the Embarcadero, and Downtown, and finishes again in Chinatown. The proceeds from the run benefit the Chinatown YMCA Community Center, which serves more than 1,200 youth and their families from Chinatown and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Dumpling Time: They have a lengthy menu of Chinese and Japanese dumpling varieties from gyoza to har gow.

Yank Sing: The xiao long bao are exemplary, and carts arrive in abundance carrying many other dumpling delights.

Out the Door: They have delish vegetarian dumplings!
