Neighbor Feature: The Transbay Terminal

Less than half a mile from your home at Jasper, the new landmark Transbay Transit Center will replace the former Transbay Terminal with a modern regional transportation hub containing more than one million square feet. The TTC will feature an elevated Bus Deck, retail shops, entertainment, and conference, educational and cultural space.

Extending just south of Mission Street from Second to Beale Streets, the Transit Center will connect eight Bay Area counties and the State of California through 11 transportation systems: AC Transit, BART, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit, Greyhound, Muni, SamTrans, WestCAT Lynx, Amtrak, Paratransit and California’s future High Speed Rail from San Francisco to Los Angeles/Anaheim.

Beside the access to transit around the bay and beyond, we’re looking forward to some of these design features:

City Park. This elevated 5.4-acre rooftop public park stretches 1,400-foot-long and will include a variety of activities and amenities, including an open-air amphitheater for rooftop concerts and live performances, gardens, trails, open grass areas, a children’s play area, as well as a restaurant and café.

Grand Hall. The ground-level floor features a Grand Hall with a prominent Light Column allowing natural daylight into the building. The main entrance hall off Mission Square will include a public information center, ticket kiosks, automated ticketing booths and the main escalators.

Public Art. Phase I of the art program consists of the installation of five large-scale, permanent, commissioned artworks in the Transit Center. These artworks merge seamlessly with the grand and elegant architecture of the facility.

Depending on the availability of funding, Phase II of the art program may include opportunities for artists to create smaller scaled works in the passenger lobbies, corridors, passageways, pedestrian entrances, as treatment of temporary, construction-related chain link fencing, and in a new park planned at Second and Howard Streets.

Construction of the Transit Center is currently underway. Construction is expected to be complete in late 2017. Dive deeper into the Transbay Transit Center with these Transbay Center Facts.
